Principals

jimmy A traveling enthusiast, Jimmy Purba, the firm's Managing Director, is always fascinated with vernacular architecture. His design approaches focus less on the so-called architectural 'style' and more on the underlying orders that can be found universally in vernacular architecture. His interest mainly exploring and reinterpreting the poetic quality of vernacular architecture while at the same time providing the modern elements of present day building and design.

As an active member of Bataknese ethnic community, he has an independent study_ called 'Pustaha' (meaning sacred book in Batak language)_ focusing on traditional Batak architecture and vernacular architecture in general and has implemented his research on numerous projects. Among those projects are nonprofit religious buildings, such as church and Sunday school. His recently completed work is a church located in Pekalongan, owned by Huria Kristen Batak Protestant Community.

Collaboration

Hepta and Collaboration

As a design firm, HEPTA believes in creative collaboration. We believe that the best architecture can be achieved through a process of intensive, ongoing dialogue, collaboration, analysis, and application of instinct and insight. We also believe that the collaborative efforts of a varied group of designers and architects would be far more effective than those of any one individual.

Since its founding, Hepta has collaborated with a number of architects. From 1996 to 1998, Hepta was joining forces with Rekamatra Architect in hospitality, housing and commercial project on Batam Island. This partnership was a valuable opportunity for Hepta since Hepta can exercises on numerous built projects.

Our most rigorous and fruitful partnership is our alliance with Baskoro Tedjo. Since 2002, Baskoro Tedjo, a senior lecturer in Department Architecture of Bandung Institute of Technology, who recently came from his doctoral study in Japan, has decided to come aboard. Until now, He has been working together with Hepta team of architects on several projects and design competition.

MORE ABOUT ASSOCIATION OF HEPTA AND BASKORO TEDJO

Our first project together was Retreat Facilities in Pandaan. It was followed by two other commissions in the next year, Government Office in Siak Sri Indrapura Regency and Correan Community Center in Surabaya.

Collaborating with other architect or other firm will bring different perspectives and skills to the table. It’s a group of architects combining their talents rather than a group of person who have grown up working together.

Design Principles

Our design process is inspired by seven principles

1. Local: The existing building site, its environment, and its culture are the greatest source of inspiration and knowledge.

2. Sustainable: HEPTA’s architecture is architecture for living and nurturing a better life. Consequently architecture must protect sustainability of our environment.

3. Knowledge base: HEPTA emphasizes the problem solving side of architecture, consequently every design decision must base on knowledge and reason.

4. Livable: Our design is a process towards creating human livable spaces. Our design derives and suits itself with human needs.

5. Honest: Hepta’s architecture derives from honesty of material, shape, function, and the association between them.

6. Integrated: Hepta’s architecture is integration of architecture and landscape and their related building sciences.

7. Simple: Design is a complex process involving expert from multi-disciplines. HEPTA seeks to simplify complex matter into simple order. Simplicity will guarantee building and environment working together properly.
